INFORMATION SERVICES PERCEPTION ASSESSMENT
CASE STUDY FOR COMPANY X
Situation

This medium-sized sporting goods manufacturer was experiencing widely differing opinions between their IT staff and the business community who used their services. Among the business units there were constant arguments over conflicting reports that seemed to be reporting different results that were supposedly based on the same data. Applications development was out of control and there was little support from the IT staff. There was no master plan for information services. Senior management realized that they were not getting the value from their IT department that they felt they should be getting.

EII Solution

EII was asked to assess the situation and determine the appropriate corrective actions. EII identified a group of 23 directors and managers across six functional business areas. All 23 completed the Information Systems Perception Assessment.

Results

The results were presented by EII at a meeting of several senior managers. As the presentation was being made an unidentified individual in the back of the room was visibly reacting to what was being reported. Dr. Wysocki was delivering the presentation and wondered what he had said that would create such reactions. At the end of the presentation there was a brief question and answer period. The first hand to be raised was that of the unidentified person who introduced himself as the CIO and said, "Bob, I don't know how you came to the conclusions you did based on your survey but I want to thank you for doing me a great service. I have been telling senior management the same thing for the past few years and no one would believe me. I hope we can follow your suggested corrective actions because I believe they will solve many of our problems."

Outcome

The analysis of the data from the 23 business managers suggested that five projects be commissioned. They were and the company began to get the return on its IT investment that it had expected.
