ORGANIZATIONAL READINESS ASSESSMENT
CASE STUDY FOR COMPANY X
Situation

A large electronics manufacturing company was plagued with too many IT projects that were completed late, were over budget and cancelled because they were out of specification, or when completed did not meet customer needs. The problem was so serious that it was affecting profitability. They needed to find the root causes and fix them.

EII Solution

EII was asked to assess the situation and determine the appropriate corrective actions. EII identified a group of 84 managers in the IT department. There were 14 executives, 20 senior managers and 40 project managers spread across six functional areas within the IT department. All 84 managers completed the Organization Readiness Assessment.

Results

An assessment with 84 responses is generally a rich data set and would allow a very thorough comparative analysis of several subsets of data. While the report showing the distribution of responses for all 84 managers was informative, the real value was to be found by comparing the data for each of the six functional areas and each of the three manager types. A comparison of the data for each of the six functional areas did not suggest any pattern variations that needed further analysis. A comparison of the data for each of the three manager types showed a marked difference however. The data plots of the executives and senior managers were quite similar but very different than the plot of the project manager data. Upon further investigation we discovered that the executives were very autocratic and not too familiar with how project management was practiced in the organization. They had distanced themselves from the project management process. To survive, the senior managers had adopted the same style of management. The variations between these two data plots and the project managers' data showed a very obvious disconnect and it was that disconnect that was at the root of many of the problems the company was experiencing.

EII recommendations included:

  • A one-day executive briefing to help the executives understand the value of good project management practices and their role in the process The design and implementation of an enterprise-wide project management process
  • The establishment of a Project Support Office
